JOHN JAY-EAST FISHKILL AT MAHOPAC

Final: John Jay-East Fishkill wins 31-17, handing Mahopac its first loss of the season. The Patriots may just be the cream of the crop in Class AA. Justin Autera scored a late touchdown for the Indians for the final score.

Update 8: Only the final score is up in the air now. John Jay-East Fishkill is now in front 31-10 with two minutes left. Belluzzi is having an incredible game. He just added a 9-yard touchdown and now has 243 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries for the game.

Update 7: The legend of Devaney reports that it’s 24-10 through three quarters now.

Update 6: Things continue to worsen for undefeated Mahopac. John Jay now leads 24-10 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. The Indians offense is really going to have to crank it up if a comeback is in the cards.

Update 5: Mike Belluzzi has taken over this game. Scoring on runs of 33 and 59 yards, the Patriots now hold a 21-10 lead late in the second quarter.

Update 4: Mahopac has gone in front early in the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal by John Maloney, appropriately on the day he was featured in a story on kickers by Kevin Devaney. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Update 3: Mahopac has responded to tie. Tim Taps scored on a 2-yard QB keeper on 4th down. Sounds like this could be a classic game.

Update 2: John Jay-East Fishkill has jumped in front 7-0 on a 5-yard run by Mike Belluzi. There is 5:18 left in the first quarter.

Update 1: Mr. Varsity Insider himself just gave me a pregame call. According to Kevin Devaney, the game is 15 minutes away from kickoff, but there are already more than 5,000 fans in the stands. He also said there were plenty of pregame festivities including singing performances and even three guys parachuting onto the field holding an American flag and the gameball. Now if only someone could parachute into our office here with the Chicken Francaise I ordered awhile ago.

SOMERS AT LAKELAND

Final: Joe-Lo has informed me that Somers won by a final of 35-6. The Tuskers are now an impressive 6-0 on the season, matching Ossining for the only perfect records in Class A.

Update 3: Somers leads 28-6 after three quarters. A 70-yard kickoff return by Colin Tullgren was the Tuskers’ latest score. Lakeland’s TD came o a 21-yard connection from Conor Prunty to Cris Fazio.

Update 2: Somers now leads 21-0 at halftime. Matt Deiana had a 43-yard touchdown run and Rob Lombardo had a 1-yard run. Both players missed last week with injuries, but are back tonight in a big way, along with lineman Henry Smith.

Lakeland looked like it might tie it up late in the first quarter when Steve Barretta recovered a fumble at the Somers 12. But Michael Ortler made an interception in the end zone. Conor Prunty is 6 of 16 for 64 yards for the Hornets.

Update 1: Joe-Lo, aka Joe Lombardi, just called me with his first update from this big game. Somers leads 7-0. The Tuskers scored on a 46-yard pass from Erik Zmuidins on the last play of the quarter. Should be the first of many big plays.

HEN HUD AT YORKTOWN

Final: Yorktown 36, Hen Hud 7

Wow. A lot of people are really looking for Yorktown updates. Of course, that is pretty much the only game we didn’t cover tonight. From the looks of it, it appears the ‘Huskers won easily, so rest assured those readers from ‘Town. An impressive win over a Sailors squad coming off an upset over Lakeland.

PANAS AT PEEKSKILL

Final: Panas wins 34-12.

HORACE GREELEY AT BREWSTER

Final: Josh Thomson informs me that Brewster has won 34-14 on homecoming. Joe Rubino had 120 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. The Bears also got big ground games from Trevor Smith (100 yards and a touchdown) and Billy Thomas (69 yards and two touchdowns).

Matt Brophy scored both touchdowns for the Quakers.

Update 3: The scoring is flowing like water now. Joe Rubino scored on a 45-yard touchdown to give Brewster a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter. Rubino has two touchdowns on the night.

Update 2: Horace Greeley has tied up the game at 14. Matt Brophy scored on a 5-yard run with 7:04 left in the third quarter, his second touchdown of the game.

Update 1: Josh Thomson just emailed me that it is 14-7 Brewster at halftime. More details to come.

ALBERTUS MAGNUS AT DOBBS FERRY

Final: The update alert is officially over. Gold at Gould just called to say Dobbs held on for a 13-6 win. Still, a stunning result by all accounts.

Update 5: Albertus Magnus is at the Dobbs Ferry 36-yard line with 5 minutes to play down 13-6. The Falcons got the ball back after a fumbled snap by the Eagles. This is shaping out to be the Eagles’ closest call against a Section 1 opponent in years!

Update 4: We have an UPSET ALERT!!! This is absolutely incredible. Dobbs Ferry only leads 13-6 with 10 minutes to play. Nick Romeo caught an 11-yard touchdown pass. The scoring drive was set up by a 67-yard pass to Michael Velazquez. More details to come!

Update 3: This game between Falcons and Eagles is flying. 13-0 Dobbs now through three quarters. Rob Alexander scored on a 44-yard run, but the kick failed on the extra point attempt.

Update 2: Gold at Gould reports that it is still only 7-0 at halftime.

Update 1: Jeff Gold is on the scene at Gould Park. Yes, that’s Gold at Gould. Anyway, he just called to say that Dobbs Ferry is up 7-0 after one quarter thanks to a 3-yard touchdown run by Devonte Brailsford. This is actually a great start for the Falcons. Something tells me, the Eagles aren’t done scoring, though.

OSSINING AT TAPPAN ZEE

Final: Ossining wins 35-7. Tappan Zee scored a late touchdown with 43 seconds left. Kreamer finished 5 for 5 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Talk about being efficient.

Update 2: Ossining leads 28-0 at halftime. Harold reports that Ossining coach Dan Ricci pulled the first team with 8:36 to play in the second quarter so there probably won’t be too much more scoring in this one.

Update 1: Harold Gutmann is on the scene. He reports that Ossining leads 21-0 after one quarter. A sign of how this game was and is probably going to go came when Lemar Johnson caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Justin Kreamer on the first play from scrimmage.

6:33 p.m.: All reporters are on their way to their respective games and we are within 30 minutes of kickoff for most of these contests. So put out the chips and salsa, cue up our live feeds of the games and keep it here for updates. Back shortly.

5:00 p.m.: Just a heads up, if you’re planning on taking 287 West to get to a game leave extra early or take another route. Journal News reporter Tony Pinciaro just arrived in the office and informed us of the major delays, saying “it’s a parking lot” out there.

This will obviously most affect those traveling to the Ossining at Tappan Zee game. Let’s just hope Ossining’s team bus left the school with plenty of time to spare or the Dutchmen might not have anyone to kick off to at 7 p.m.

The showdown of 5-0 teams between John Jay-East Fishkill and host Mahopac headlines tonight’s slate.

You can catch a live video feed here at LoHud.com at 7:30 p.m You can also watch the big battle between unbeaten Somers (5-0) and host Lakeland (4-1) at 7 p.m. Both games will be available at “LoHud.com/vcsports.”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008310090021

History Repeats itself in Mahopac: Patriots too much for the Indians.

Great night in Mapohac, the place was packed. Not too many places around here where you have pregame fireworks and 3 guys parachuting onto the field with the game ball.
Only one draw back the predictable problems of parking, traffic and poor crowd control.
Spent and enjoyable evening renewing old friendships at Pac and met new folks in the stands including some very insightful coachs there scouting the game.
    Yes, the game, great start.
Walsh has worked wonders up in Dutchess. John Jay just may be the cream of the crop in AA.
The Patriots dominated Mahopac on both sides of the ball. One should not imply that Mahopac is not a good football team, they are. John Jay is just much better and better coached. Neither QB proved to be very impressive passers but both run well and both teams have very quick and versitle running backs.
The big difference in this game was Belluzzi. The kid just ran all over the over the place, Mahopac could not stop him. Runs hard and breaks tackles and is lightning quick to the outside. John Jay pretty much tells you where the pitch is going to go, just try and stop it. Mahopac like 5 other teams could not. MIke Belluzzi was even 1 for 1 passing on the halfback option to his QB good for about 10 years and a piviotal first down.

Ossining’s Kreamer 5 for 5. Only 5 surprises here, NO DROPPED PASSES.

  15. Yur DAd

yes greeley is out unless our lady of lourdes and Poughkeepsie tie a tie is the only way that will keep greeley in it

  16. ganggreen

Another big win for the Yorktown Huskers Football Team and all we get is eight lines of coverage in your newspaper. What will it take for you guys at the Journal news to give these kids their proper recognition?

  18. MingTheMerciless

Ms Curtin: Bo HOO HOO, Wah Wah Wah!!!!. No one ever gives my Johnny any credit. Go read the North County News. STOP Being A CRY BABY.

  19. 9394stchamps

thank you Miriam! But saunders beat yonkers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    maninthestands,
just a quick note, JJEF’s belluzi ran for 250 yards and 4 td’s. nick strang didnt have to do anything but hand the ball to him. that doesnt mean he is an unimpressive qb. he simply didnt have to do anything friday night. hes probably one of the top 3 qb’s in the section. hes got size, arm strength, can run extremely well for a big guy, and NEVER throws the ball to the defense. he puts the ball where only his reciever can get it or its going to be incomplete. dont mistake friday night where he didnt have to throw to win. if he has to believe me he can. and he does it without what you would call a stellar recieveing core.
