Class AA state quarterfinal updates: New Rochelle vs. La Salle

November
15

Update No. 9: FINAL SCORE: New Ro 33, La Salle 7. The Huguenots get a third shot in a row at Monroe-Woodbury next Saturday, 8 p.m., at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.

Update No. 8: End of three quarters: New Ro 33, La Salle 7. The Cadets are driving at the New Ro 15 as the fourth quarter begins.

Update No. 7: New Ro is pulling away now. Isaiah Manigault had a 30-yard run and McGhee scored on a 38-yard quarterback draw with 3:27 left in the quarter. The Huguenots are up 33-7 and it sure looks like a rematch—for the third year in a row—with Monroe-Woodbury next weekend.

Update No. 6: New Rochelle just tacked on another touchdown with 7:11 to go in the third. The big play was a 35-yard pass from McGhee to Jamal Fernandez. Cherry took it in from the five, and McGhee missed on his two-point pass, so the lead is now 26-7.

Update No. 5: The Huguenots had a chance to blow it open just before halftime, but Jonny McGhee’s pass into the end zone was picked off by Cainaan Lacy. It’s halftime, and the Huguenots lead 20-7.

Update No. 4: New Ro got a big break, didn’t capitalize, then got another and did. First a bad snap on a La Salle punt resulted in a 32-yard loss and a first down at the Cadets’ 22. La Salle held on four plays, but after taking over on downs, Marquis Terrell fumbled and New Ro’s Tremayne Williams picked it up and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. The PAT kick was blocked, so it’s 20-7, New Ro, with 6:55 to go in the half.

Update No. 3: It’s coming fast and furious now. La Salle tied the game at 7-7after Tyler Washington intercepted Jonny McGhee and returned it to the New Ro 12. The Cadets scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Mike Murray that deflected to Washington in the end zone. But with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, New Ro went back ahead 14-7 after a big kickoff return by Chris Cherry to the La Salle 41. Cherry ran it in from the six, and Martin kicked the PAT. The first quarter just ended, so it’s 14-7 Huguenots.

Update No. 2: Talk about fast starts. New Ro’s Shawn Day intercepted a tipped pass from La Salle QB Mike Murray and returned it to the Cadets’ eight. David Ugarte ran it in from the three, and Marvill Martin kicked the extra point. Less than two minutes in, it’s 7-0 Huguenots.

Update No. 1: Game time about five minutes away, and Mother Nature seems to be cooperating. It’s still raining, but to a much lesser degree—a bit more than a drizzle—and the field appears to have drained quite well. We’ve had the anthem, and we’re moments from the coin toss and kickoff.

About 45 minutes before gametime, it began to absolutely pour, sideways rain and wind, here at Dietz Stadium. That didn’t deter New Rochelle, which went about its pregame “warmup” as if nothing was happening. La Salle remained in its lockerroom until just a few minutes ago, as we approach 30 minutes to kickoff. It’s unbelievable rain, puddling on the old-style astroturf. New Ro’s kids’ uniforms are completely soaked and won’t dry out until tomorrow, so even if this passes, it’s going to be a burden. And as I type this, the rain just increased in intensity. The field is starting to look like a green lake.
