Class D state quarterfinal updates: Tuckahoe vs. Chester

November
15

Update No. 14: FINAL SCORE: Tuckahoe 47, Chester 20. Tuckahoe advances to the state D semifinal next weekend here at Dietz Stadium. Tuckahoe will play Section 7/10 champ Moriah in next week’s semifinal, Friday at 4 p.m.

Update No. 13: My fingers are getting tired. Joshua Guthrie of Tuckahoe ran one in from 18 yards out, and now the lead is 47-20, Tigers with 6:30 to go.

Update No. 12: Chester just scored on a three-yard run by Shawn Thomas, and Justin Hernandez caught a two-point conversion pass from Balzano, and it’s 40-20 with 8:36 left.

Update No. 11: What a game this Carlos Carrero is having! He scored two touchdowns on fumble recoveries, then one on a pass reception, and he just intercepted another one in the end zone. Two plays later, Michael Workman sprinted 75 yards down the right sideline to make this a blowout, 40-12.

Update No. 10: Score after three quarters: Tuckahoe 33, Chester 12.

Update No. 9: Alex Melendez intercepted a razzle-dazzle wide receiver option pass by Chester’s Justin Hernandez, and Tuckahoe drove 33 yards for another touchdown by Carrero, this one on a three-yard pass from Gentile. Jennings’ kick makes it 33-12 with 1:07 left in the third.

Update No. 8: Chester just went the length of the field, but on fourth-and-goal from the Tuckahoe 5, the Tigers’ Michael Workman intercepted Balzano’s pass in the end zone. Then Tuckahoe went the other way, Anthony Gentile throwing or 22, then running for 36, and eventually scoring on a seven-yard run. Jennings kicked the PAT, so in a two-touchdown swing sequence, the Tigers stretch their lead to 26-12 with 3:54 to go in the third.

Update No. 7: Halftime score: Tuckahoe 19, Chester 12.

Update No. 6: We’ve got a game. Chester just went to the air for another touchdown drive, finished off by Balzano’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hernandez. The two-point conversion was stopped, so Tuckahoe’s up 19-12 with 1:43 left in the half.

Update No. 5: Chester’s on the board with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Matt Balzano to Danny Conklin. Balzano’s two-point conversion pass was dropped by Victor Cruz, who at first appeared to make a diving grab, then lost control. So with 5:18 left in the second, it’s 19-6, Tuckahoe.

Update No. 4: Jarett Sommer scored on a 16-yard run to finish off a 55-yard Tuckahoe drive. With Gary Jennings’ PAT kick, it’s 19-0 Tigers with 7:42 to play in the first half.

Update No. 3: End of the first quarter score: Tuckahoe 12, Chester 0.

Update No. 2: Carrero just struck again with 2:00 left in the first quarter. Chester’s Matt Balzano threw an incomplete swing pass for J.P. Hackett, but it was ruled a lateral pass, and when there was no whistle blown, Carrero scooped it up and returned it 31 yards for his second fumble recovery touchdown of the quarter. Joshua Guthrie was stopped on the two-point conversion run, so it’s 12-0 Tigers.

Update No. 1: Tuckahoe’s Carlos Carrero just picked up a fumble by Chester’s Danny Conklin and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. Gary Jennings PAT was wide, so the Tigers are up 6-0 with 8:18 left in the first quarter.

Game is under way at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.
