State Class A semifinal updates: Nyack vs. Burnt Hills

November
21

Update No. 10: FINAL SCORE: Burnt Hills 14, Nyack 13.

Update No. 9: GAME (just about) OVER. Nyack had driven into Burnt Hills territory, but Nicholls was sacked and lost the ball. Burnt Hills recovered, and with 10 seconds left, just needs to take a knee. The final will be 14-13, Burnt Hills. Nyack’s remarkable run is done.

Update No. 8: That didn’t take long, either. Burnt Hills, playing out of the shotgun, went right through Nyack’s defense, Layton  scoring from the seven, and then kicking the extra point that put Burnt Hills on top for the first time in the game. With 1:15 left in the fourth, it’s 14-13, Burnt Hills.

Update No. 7: As they say in the text world, OMG! Nyack’s Francis Stewart broke a couple of tackles and then busted loose, returning the next kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown! The PAT was blocked, but just 16 seconds after they had been tied, the Indians are back on top, 13-7. That PAT might come back to haunt them, though.

Update No. 6: Now it’s tied. Burnt Hills went 44 yards after a short Nyack punt, and Brandon Beatty scored from the eight. Layton kicked the extra point, and with 5:02 remaining in the fourth, it’s 7-7.

Update No. 5: Burnt Hills drove inside the Nyack 5, and was stopped by Nyack and by penalties. Paul Layton tried a 27-yard field goal that was partially blocked and sailed wide left. With under 9:00 to go, it’s still 7-0 Nyack.

Update No. 4: End of three quarters, still 7-0, Nyack. But the Spartans are driving, inside the Nyack 30 as we start the fourth quarter. Of course the Indians don’t do anything the easy way, right?

Update No. 3: Halftime score: Nyack 7, Burnt Hills 0. The Indians have moved the ball pretty much every time they get it, an they’ve allowed almost nothing to the Spartans. But they fumbled and lost it deep in Burnt Hills territory and have absolutely wasted their own offense—BH can’t deal with Anthony Davis running—by taking penalties.

Update No. 2: Nyack is moving the ball pretty well on Burnt Hills, but stalling its progress with procedure penalties. Score at the end of the first quarter: Nyack 7, Burnt Hills 0.

Update No. 1: Dominic Leonard’s interception on the third play of the game got Nyack going, and Anthony Davis broke a couple of tackles and scored on a 28-yard run. Sanley Pierre Louis kicked the PAT, and with 9:29 left in the first, it’s 7-0 Nyack. Oh, and Castellano is wearing long pants.

Pregame: Now it’s really, really cold at Dietz. One Section 1 team, Tuckahoe, is out, losing to Moriah earlier this evening. Nyack is warming up about 45 minutes before the 8 p.m. kickoff—if warming up is a word you can even fathom in this weather. Coach John Castellano, who usually goes with shorts, had long pants on when I saw him earlier. Don’t know if he’s got enough guts or craziness to go to the shorts at gametime. Some of the Burnt Hills coaches have shorts on, but they’re from Ballston Lake near Saratoga, so this probably feels like June to them.
