State Class AA semifinal updates: New Rochelle vs. Monroe-Woodbury

November
22

Update No. 9: The Huguenots had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal as time was running out, but first took a penalty for too many men in the huddle or illegal substitution. Then as the clock was winding to zero, McGhee pulled down the field goal snap and got up and threw it—just as he had on the two-ppint conversion, to Chukumerije, who was tackled short of the goal line as time expired. FINAL SCORE: Monroe-Woodbury 10, New Rochelle 8.

Update No. 8: Jonny McGhee ran for 12 yards and then threw to Tremayne Williams, and with a facemask penalty vs. M-W, the Huguenots have a first down at the Monroe 12.

Update No. 7: New Rochelle just stopped M-W on a fourth-and-three and took over on their own 29 with five minutes to go.

Update No. 6: Monroe kicker Jamie Boyle just booted a 35-yard field goal that floated through the wind and just made it over the crossbar, and M-W has gone back on top 10-8 with 7:50 to play. New Ro greatly helped the Crusaders at the end of a good kickoff return by tacking on a pair of penalties, and setting up Monroe at the New Ro 35.

Update No. 5: New Rochelle has just gone ahead 8-7 after a 97-yard drive. Jonny McGhee heaved a 32-yard pass to the back of the end zone and Tremayne Williams went up and got it, and got his feet down for a touchdown. Then on the PAT—and we don’t know if this was a gutsy fake or a bad snap—McGhee the holder threw a two-point conversion pass to Janna Chukumerije with 11:21 to go.

Update No. 4: End of three quarters: Monroe 7, New Ro 0. The Huguenots have a bit of a drive going, finally. They’re at the Monroe 35 to start the fourth.

Update No. 3: It’s tough going, partly because of the elements, partly because of the defenses. After the first half: Monroe 7, New Ro 0.

Update No. 2: On the first play of the quarter, Trevor Officer scored on a four-yard run, and Jamie Boyle kicked the extra point, so it’s 7-0 Crusaders.

Update No. 1: This is a slugfest, 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. But Monroe-Woodbury blocked a New Ro punt and is driving, with a second-and-goal from the New Ro four to open the second quarter.

I strongly believe the refs in giving a 20 yard penalty to NR , then deciding the game on a questionable call on NR for too many men, were the difference. HS refs are jackasses. Their need to feel important due to their empty lives, compels them to interfere and decide who wins instead of letting the student athletes decide.

Dearest Joe ~ if the NR team was good as you all claimed then they would have score more than 8 points making the 20 yards in penalties and illegal substition penalty irrelevant.

You forgot to mention the ref’s missed an illegal substitution penalty on NR in the third quarter and were very generous when spotting NR’s ball.

Extremely hard fought game but in the end the better team won.

Lurker; I hope you’re not an example of MW HS education. Maybe they should concentrate a little less on their very overrated football team. Why can’t refs allow the players to decide the game? Was it so important to penalize NR when they were on the 4 yard line with less than 30 seconds left. Were the refs worried NR would score? I know Monroe is a sterile place so it’s important they get their yearly trip to Syracuse to lose in the dome. I don’t care which team won.I have more important things to occupy my time, but I happen to watch the game as a neutral observer. However, I hate when “refs” feel they, rather than the players, must decide the outcome of games because their lives are otherwise empty and unimportant. Why would any adult referee HS games unless they can cheat for their favorite team? They enjoy inflicting pain on the unfortunate team they don’t want to win. They are like many cops. Why be a cop if you can’t bully taxpayers? This was basically a home game for MW since it was 20 minutes on the Thruway to Kingston, while NR had to travel well over an hour. But MW doesn’t play well when their semi-literate fans are outnumbered.

Disgruntled much? I certainly hope you don’t represent the greater New Rochelle community. MW must be sterile, they beat NR the years running and are preparing for their 4th consecutive trip to Syracuse.

Why would the ref’s call a penatly? Why wouldn’t they? I supposed the face mask and late hit along the sidelines shouldn’t have been called on NR either.

You want to talk about home team ref’s, look at how Nyack “won”. The Section 1 ref’s took the game away from Cornwall last week and you know it. I’m sure somewhere on lohud.com you posted how great of a call the ref’s made, hypocrite.

So your excuse for the loss is 1) the ref’s and 2) the ride? I’m sure the luxury coach buses the players and fans rode up in were terrible. Would those also be excuses if NR made it to the Syracuse and lost?

Two great teams played last night and the better team won. Overrated or not, MW has been the reason why NR has not made it to the Dome the past three years.

Clearly you have more important things to occupy your time, you’re responding to message board posts at nearly 5 in the morning.

  6. BIG FAN

MW won the game because they were the better team that night. NR players make no excuses, they are a class act and will be ready next year. MW best of luck to you in the Finals, hope you win it all.

Joe Hamilton…I don’t know if the refs made the right call or not. The player was not in the huddle. He ran on the field as the huddle broke. I believe the player must be in the huddle to call that penalty. However the refs are neutral refs for these games. So I am sure there were no FAVORITE CALLS as you think there were. It seems like you have a problem with any kind of authority. Why didn’t NR kick the field goal ? If you are a top flite team you should have a kicker who can make a 25 yard FG. I was pulling for NR being a Section 1 guy. I wasn’t neutral like you claim you were. And if you think so lowly about how the refs call games. Why don’t you take the test and be an official and make a so called difference. It is amazing how many fans blame the refs for a loss.

    Joe b,

“I believe the player must be in the huddle to call that penalty.”

The player(s) does not have to be in the huddle, otherwise a team could run any number of guys onto the field without going into the huddle and withdraw them to try and confuse the defense. Each team is responsible for knowing they have the proper number of players on the field.

Illegal Substitution. This is a post from a football officials blog that I was going by.

We’ve been instructed (NJ) that having 12 in the huddle, or even simply breaking the huddle with 12 is not necessarily a penatly IF the 12th player moves to his sideline imeadiately after the team breaks the huddle and he does so in a manner that does not confuse the defense.

The offense is allowed to complete their substitution. If a sub comes in late and the huddle is breaking then the offense is allowed to complete the substitution without penalty as long as the replaced player leaves in a timely manner.
The White Hat will have to make this call as he is usually the nearest the huddle and can see how the substituting is being handled.

    Joe b,

What you have posted is correct. That is on a 1 player for 1 player type substitution (or 2 for 2 or 3 for 3, etc. depending on the number of subs coming in) where a team is huddling. There isn’t a specific rule about the offense huddling with 12 players. It has to do with the timing of a replaced player leaving the field once a substitute enters.

But Illegal Substitution is also be called if the offense lines up in their formation with 12 guys and do not huddle.

Also, a player cannot substitute for himself meaning #12 cannot go into the huddle from the sideline and then leave the field. One of the other 11 must leave.
