Girls soccer: North Rockland remains unbeaten

October

tjndc5-5rb9ub2u4jot4r68dfc_layoutThe season is more than half over, yet there are a surprising number of undefeated clubs out there in girls soccer. Briarcliff, Rye, Bronxville, Ardsley, Ursuline, and North Rockland makes six local teams, by my count. That’s not even counting Arlington, John Jay-East Fishkill, and Ketcham, who I’m not sure about because they’re out of our coverage area.

I was in New City today to see one of those, North Rockland. Despite a competitive effort by Clarkstown North and a good defensive gameplan, North Rockland remained among the unbeaten with a 2-0 win.

This game was scoreless until the 63rd minute. North stopper Molly Spellman was doing a great job sticking to Francesca Kentimentos (pictured above with Maya Kantor), North Rockland’s unstoppable striker. Add that to good ball prevention by the midfield and Kentimentos got very few good touches.

Coach Jennifer Czumak even moved her back to the midfield with 22 minutes to play so she could get the ball herself.

She finally did score, but it wasn’t on North’s defense. She took a direct kick from the left sideline and curled it perfectly under the crossbar to break the scoreless tie. You can count on one hand the number of girls in Section 1 who could have placed it in that spot.

She has scored in all but one game this season.

Andrea Curcio scored the other goal with 3:05 left. Kentimentos’s shot hit the bar and bounced down where Curcio booted it in.

Credit for keeping North Rockland in the game until Kentimentos could get free goes to the defense. They’ve shut out four opponents in a row and eight of 11.

    Jake,
Lets remember that this is a team sport and it is not just one player (FK) that does her job all over the field. NR is deep, and credit , (and press) should go to all of the players that contribute on this team. NOT JUST THE GOAL SCORERS!!!

Just been informed by coach Czumak that North Rockland is not in fact unbeaten. Our standings had them tying Washingtonville, but that was actually a 4-3 loss. So the team is unbeaten in section but 9-1 overall.

Good job by Jenn correcting the record, and my daughter played with FK when they where young (U13) – Say what you will, she’s the most skilled player in the area. I understand parents want to see a sweet humble girl on and off the field, but I prefer a player that goes out and takes no prisoners and doesn’t apologize for her play. She will curse you out on the field and try to intimidate you every chance she can. If you back down you’re toast, if you step up you can shut her down. Last thing, what defense gives up 4 goals to Washingtonville and thinks they’re good?

I’m in agreement with John that FK is a very skilled player and agree that you will always take a player who takes no prisoners if it’s done within the rules. The part of FK’s game that I have difficulty with is when she gets frustrated she will play dirty and try to hurt opposing players.

  5. NR star fan

FK is one of the most skilled soccer plays new york has seen in years. She has raw talent that people wish for. She may at times play dirty but we all do what we have to in order to succeed. She is a great player and should not be punished by critics for foul play. All the greats do what they have to in order to be great. she leads the team to victory and thats what matters. GO NR
