Greeley outlasted North Rockland this afternoon in a meet that came down to the final event, the 400-meter freestyle relay.
The Quakers sat three of their most-experienced swimmers -Sammie Cooper, Racquel Giner and Alex Gorki.
“It gave some other people a chance,” said Cooper. “Our team is so big and we like to see other people succeed, but it was kind of close.”
The Quakers pulled out a 97-89 victory and are 3-0. They go against Fox Lane on Tuesday.
North Rockland was strong early and had built an51-43 lead after Hannah Hillebrand and Melanie Dilascio went 1-2 in diving. Greeley, though, kept chipping away.
The Red Raiders were up two going into the 400 free relay, and needed to place first in order to win the meet. The Quakers, though, placed first and second.
It was never really in doubt.
Katie Duncalf (above) quickly moved in front, and the lead was increased by Alex Rota, Tori Powell and Elizabeth Barry, who touched in at 3:59.42. Laura Augustinos, Sara Blacker, Colleen Powers and Sarah Schattschneider finished strong, getting in a half-second before North Rockland’s top freestylers to grab second place.
