Girls soccer: Live updates, Briarcliff vs. Center Moriches

November
20

Update, 22 minutes left in first half: The game is scoreless. Briarcliff has dominated the action but has nothing to show for it. The Center Moriches made a couple saves.

Update, 21:07 left in the first half: Briarcliff leads 1-0. Katie Weiner scored off a rebound of a header by Liana Cornacchio.

Update, 8 minutes left: Briarcliff up 1-0. Cornacchio scored on a rebound of her own penalty kick but it was waved off. No one on the defense had touched it. Center Moriches nearly tied it when a free kick rang off the crossbar.

Update, Halftime: Briarcliff 1-0. Cornacchio has had several opportunities but has missed the net, including on the penalty kick, which hit the post. Center Moriches generated a few chances so it is in the game.

Update, 26:50 left: Weiner strikes again, scoring on a header. Briarcliff leads 2-0.

Update, 17 minutes left: Still 2-0 Briarcliff. Danielle Christiano was given a yellow card earlier in the half so she will have to be careful

Update, FINAL: Briarcliff 2-1. The Bears will play for a third straight state title tomorrow at 2 at SUNY Cortland.

Update, postgame: Center Moriches scored with about a minute to left. A long shot from outside the 18-yard box bounced off the crossbar and in the net. Still, Briarcliff was never really threatened again, not allowing a ball near its end.

The Bears will play Section 2 champ Mechanicville, which defeated Livonia (Briarcliff’s state final opponent last year) 2-1 in OT.
